My Book
What They Never Taught You in Sunday School is a Bible study, a historical survey, and
a personal testimony. It began in a Christian chat room on the Internet, where I began
to observe that many people simply don’t have a good understanding of the faith that
they profess. They don’t know much about the distinctive teachings of their church, or
what makes it different from the one down the street. Even among people who have
been a member of a church for years, this pattern seemed consistent.
Practically all of us say that believe in the Bible as the authoritative source of doctrine;
but instead of reading it for ourselves, we often defer to church traditions or family
custom. We will examine the hazards of instant conversion, and the origin of the Altar
Call. In many churches, only about one-half of all members attend on any given Sunday,
so how are we supposed to be a witness to the unsaved outside world? We may become
more materially prosperous each year, but you'd never know it by watching what we
drop into the collection plate.
Since we’re saved by divine grace, does it really matter how we live? Are our children prepared to pick up the torch
after we’re gone? Did the Reformation truly renounce Catholicism, or restore primitive Christianity? Is it important
what we believe about the end times, or the Sabbath, or homeschooling? In a world of over 30,000 “Christian”
denominations, how do we make sense of it all? Many people attend church year after year, yet never really come to
grips with these important issues.
The book ends with a call to action. Every one of the problems described here has a remedy, if we are only humble
enough to admit that we have a problem.
Maybe you’ll agree with some of my conclusions, or maybe you won’t. Perhaps you will come away from the
experience even more convinced of your existing beliefs. But that’s OK, because I am not necessarily trying to change
your mind. I ask only that you consider a few important questions and examine some critical issues, the same ones
that turned my life upside-down.
